Independence Day carries special significance in the heart of every Indian. This is the day our country gained independence from colonial rule and became independent between 14 and 15 August 1947 at midnight. India is celebrating its 75th Independence Day this year.

On this special day, people celebrate by flying kites, which are a symbol of independence, hoisting the national flag, and organizing cultural events to pay tribute to the invaluable contribution of our freedom fighters.

Every year, our Prime Minister hoists the national flag in the year of the Red Fort, followed by a speech. The day has been declared a public holiday, meaning all government offices, post offices, banks, and shops will be closed on this day.

India was ruled by the British for many years. The East India Company has ruled our country for almost 100 years. In 1757, the East India Company won the battle of Palashi. Shortly after this victory, the company began to expand its power over India. Our country faced a long bloody campaign for independence.
