WhatsApp has decided to withdraw its decision regarding the terms of the new privacy policy. WhatsApp gave users up to May 15 to accept updates related to their disputed privacy policy.
After this, WhatsApp warned to delete the account. Now
the company has withdrawn the decision regarding the deadline and said that the
accounts will not be deleted even if the terms are not accepted.
Many users had objected to the proposed privacy policy
of WhatsApp and raised concerns about the right to protect their data.
According to the WhatsApp new privacy policy, users had to share their
data with Facebook, a company owned by WhatsApp.
Because of this, the company was getting a lot of
criticism and a lot of users had switched over as well. A WhatsApp spokesperson
told PTI that no account would be deleted on May 15, even if it did not accept
updates related to the policy.
The spokesman said that no WhatsApp service will be
discontinued in India, but we will send new information to the people in the
next few weeks.
By the way, they also claimed that most users have
accepted the new terms of service, but some people have not yet received this
update.
However, the spokesperson did not say what reasons the
company changed its stance and the number of users accepting these conditions.
Indeed, after the decision of WhatsApp new Privacy
Policy, the company which owns it has faced a lot of opposition. Due to
this many users are moving to other platforms. In such a situation, the new
decision of the company is going to give some relief.
WhatsApp released its new privacy policy in the first week
of January this year. It was supposed to be accepted by all users by 8
February, but the company postponed it until 15 May after protests in several
countries, including India.
As per the new privacy policy of the company, they
would collect much information including business user name, address, phone
number, location and share it with Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger.
Recently, the Delhi High Court has sought a response from
the central government and social media forums - Facebook and WhatsApp - on a
PIL filed against WhatsApp's new privacy policy.
A bench of Chief Justice DN Patel and Justice Jasmeet
Singh has issued notices to the Center, Facebook, and WhatsApp asking them to
present their case on the petition by 13 May.
WhatsApp told the bench that private conversations of
individuals are protected from end-to-end encryption. Petitioner Harsha Gupta
urged the court to grant some interim order as WhatsApp will give effect to its
policy from 15 May.
In view of this, the court listed the matter for hearing
on 13 May. Earlier, WhatsApp had said about the new privacy policy
that all users will have to accept it by 8 February.
Failure to do so will result in the user's account being
deleted. However, in view of the protest of WhatsApp's new privacy policy,
the company had extended this period to 15 May.
